Webitz - Checking out the Web from an amateur's point of view

On leave for a bit

October 15th 2007 17:08
My wife and I are travelling in Europe for about a month which explains for those who have wondered why there haven't been any posts on here for a week or more. And there won't be for another couple of weeks at least.

Sorry to disappoint all my fans, but it's difficult getting enough Internet access to do blogging at the moment. Plus I need to visit museums, art galleries, ancient ruins and the like.

Age can has its benefits

October 7th 2007 16:30
One of the pleasant things about being in England over the last few months has been that I get discounts on some things - like going to the movies - because I’m over 60. We’ve been doing quite a bit on line and it’s surprising how often the age factor comes into it. It almost makes up for the fact of getting old!
I think England is better at doing this than some of its European neighbours. They don’t seem to think age is particularly relevant at all, as far as I’ve noticed so far. But then, not speaking the language(s) very well, I may be wrong. Actually, now that I think about it, in Luxembourg my hosts told me that there some things I could get discounts on because of age. So at least one of the countries is up with the play.
We could have done with having a discount on our travel insurance. As it is, we’re not as well covered as we might be, and that was after we’d paid a substantial amount. I see some places offer travel insurance over 65, by which they mean that from the age of 65 through to 79 you can get a discount on your travel insurance. That’s probably quite a bonus, as most insurance premiums go up when you get older, rather than down.
Unfortunately I don’t quite qualify for the over 65 range. Which is sort of a plus.

Woes of Webcams

October 5th 2007 19:23
Webitz.net has suffered a bit of late because I’m travelling in Europe at the moment, and don’t have as much time to blog as normal. So this post is an attempt to keep things running.
We bought a webcam yesterday, and spent the rest of the evening frustrated because we couldn’t get everything to gel together. The webcam seemed to be showing a delayed picture, so that when you spoke your mouth would appear saying the words a few moments later. Rather like a film where the soundtrack is out of sync.
And then when we rang one of our daughters, she couldn’t see us - which rather defeated the object of the whole exercise - and we couldn’t hear her. Oh, dear.
I was of a mind to take the thing back while we were still in the same city, but my wife persevered with it this morning, along with many encouraging remarks and suggestions from yours truly, and we managed not only to see ourselves on the screen, but to be seen by the recipient. And to be heard, and to hear.
The joys of Skype are wondrous to behold - when everything’s working properly.
