Webitz - Checking out the Web from an amateur's point of view

Webitz - March 2011

Google has reported that around 50 android apps turn out to have been infected with rootkit malware.

The malware is called DroidDream and can compromise personal data by taking over the user's device.

Google has been prompt in removing the apps from the market, but whether they have yet been able to remove the malware from users' devices is another question, and is the more worrying.

Android Police, a news site on Google's operating system, calls DreamDroid "the mother of all Android malware", and notes that it "steals nearly everything it can: product ID, model, partner (provider?), language, country, and userID. But that's all child's play; the true pièce de résistance is that it has the ability to download more code. In other words, there's no way to know what the app does after it's installed, and the possibilities are nearly endless."

Scary, but definitely a place we've been before - just not with apps, perhaps.

The Guardian, which reported on this malware, has also listed the apps that you should avoid. It's perhaps ironic that a number of them have the word 'sexy' in the title.

Facebook change

March 3rd 2011 07:28
The Facebookians are continually changing stuff, and it's almost getting too hard to keep up with.

Does anyone actually know whether they've managed to get all their security buttons clicked in the right way or not...? Has anybody tried?

Anyway, here's another recent change: the Like button is becoming the Share button...or is it the other way round? There's a kind of nice economic sense about this change, a kind of cyber-environmentally-friendly approach.

Now what will happen when you click on the Like button, a full story with a headline, blurb and thumbnail will be posted to your profile wall. Do we really want everything we like stuck on our profile wall? I think there'll be a greater use of the Delete button as well.

You’ll also be given an option to comment on the story link. I'm not sure why you'd want to comment when you only wanted to 'like'. Surely that was the great advantage of just liking; you didn't have to go to the effort of adding something intelligent to the post.

Now you may think twice about hitting that Like button, because your profile page is going to start getting clogged up with stuff you really only wanted to tell the poster was something you...well, just liked.

Vadim Lavrusik, who was the smiley-faced feller who alerted me to this change (he obviously likes it) says the change was possibly necessary because people didn't appreciate the difference between sharing and liking. I find that a bit unlikely, although I know there are few - a very few - less-than-intelligent people on Facebook (none of my friends, naturally).

Anyway, it's another change that's been foisted on us by the big brother team over at Facebook. It'll be interesting to see what effect it has.

PS I haven't tested it out yet, but perhaps I should....?
