Everything2.com

I mentioned Everything2.com in the last post. It isn’t a site I’ve ever discovered in the past. I thought at first it was a site explaining words, but it’s much broader. As they state: Everything2 is a collection of user-submitted writings about, well, pretty much everything.
There you have it. The posts are all heavily-linked to other material on everything2, so that it kind of goes round and round in circles. Some of it is clever crude, some of it is quite esoteric, some of it is intellectual to the degree that I didn’t get too deeply into it, and some of it is just plain silly. (What? You didn’t expect silly?)
It’s obviously a forum people spend a good deal of time on (the linking process must be a time-consuming exercise in itself) and the range of its topics (which certainly transcend those on most forums) move from Thomas Aquinas to Mike Tyson; from art having an actual purpose to The Royal Tenenbaums; from Guass’ Law to Kismet, Hardy (don’t ask); and to subjects with long titles like: Darth Everything mistakenly identifies The Force in an angry passing pedestrian.
Okay….
Anyway, in their Introduction to Everything they say: “E2 offers you and the entire Web world a huge amount of original writing of many kinds. You can find informative articles on just about anything you can imagine, but there is also humour, poetry, fiction, opinion, criticism, personal experiences and other things that are simply hard to categorise. The text is linked together, either deliberately by the author, or by readers in the course of moving from one document to another. By simply browsing and following links, you are contributing to the integration of the text.”
It isn’t the prettiest of sites – it has that ‘forum’ look about it with the usual Google ads wending their way across the top, but it’s well organised, and the instructions for becoming a member are clear (well, fairly clear) and detailed. If you go wrong, don’t blame the owner.
Try it, if you’ve several hours to spare….!
