Firefox Does It!
July 3rd 2008 08:27
Got the word from Firefox Mozilla today: I am one of 8,002,530 people who downloaded Firefox 3 in a single day, and helped Firefox set a new Guinness World Record.
8,002,530. Crikey, that's around twice the population of New Zealand, or 002 percent of the world's population...I think.
Apparently, I'm now part of a World Record and the proud owner of the best version of Firefox yet! And yes, I must admit this version of Firefox is certainly going better than the last one, which seemed to have run out of steam a little. Furthermore I can download my very own certificate for helping set a Guinness World Record.
It's quite pretty.
I'm not sure that I'm keen on their new approach to bookmarking a page. They call it a one-step approach, but being a bookmarker who needs to have things in the right place, it's a bit annoying to have to go back later and find the link and put it in the proper folder. Just one of those quirks I have, obviously, as the bloke who wrote about Firefox 3 in our local paper thought it was commendable.
Seems it also has the ability to deal with phishing. Can't say I've noticed this, so perhaps you have to click on something on the browser to get it to work. Nope, just checked. It's part of the default package, so obviously if it's been sorting out phishing sites I haven't noticed. Phishing is a bit like making sure you've got genuine hoodia when you go online. Which is why it's worth checking. (Just thought I'd throw that in for all those hoodia users out there.)
One last mention about the World Record. Someone on the Firefox blog asks the question: Is the reason that Africa contributed so little to the download record because they all use Safari?
Oh, dear.

I must admit this is the first version of firefox I've used, being a Safari browser up until now, but it really is excellent, I don't think I could go back.

So is the beta the same as the Download Day version, Derek?
