Webitz - Checking out the Web from an amateur's point of view

Catching up

September 4th 2008 09:45
It's been nearly a fortnight since I last wrote in here, which has probably not done my stats much good. It hasn't been because I've been anti-blog: I've just been too busy doing other things, like working, or rehearsing for a dramatised version of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, one of C S Lewis' Narnia stories. This goes in front of the public in about two weeks, so things are hotting up.

Meanwhile, blogging on Orble has been on the backburner, and because my brain isn't functioning at its usual top quality level in terms of blogginess, I've been checking out the results on HitTail to give me some impetus.

As always there are some very strange requests: why would you ask for Gareth Farr - sitting on a washing machine? I can't imagine, but it brought up an archive page of my blog that happened to have both Gareth Farr (the NZ composer) and the words 'washing machine' in close proximity. The search results for this particular request haven't brought the searcher must closer to what he/she was looking for, I suspect.

Someone else looked for Mike Crowl photographer. This was very well received by my

blog(s) and other places where I appear in relation to things photographic. Again, I doubt that it helped the searcher much, but it gave me a Google search page with a majority of results pointing to something I'd written.

I've been writing quite a bit about the composer, John Adams, recently. I first heard of him in the UK while I was over there last year, and I've been catching up on his music. In fact, while I'm writing this I'm listening to some of it. For some reason if you put John Adams into Google along with any other word, it seems to bring up one of my blogs. Curious.

Another regular on my Google results is when someone goes looking for the pronunciation of the city called Boise. I wrote about this back in 2007, and still get caught up in the results. Intriguing.

While flying to Auckland and back recently, I read The Te of Piglet, by Benjamin Hoff. It begins well, and makes it through to the middle without too much strain, but winds down drastically towards the end. Anyway, writing about it was enough to add me to the Google search results most times.

While writing about the book, The Secret Life of Bees, (which I read in the UK) I quoted this paragraph: People, in general, would rather die than forgive. It’s that hard. If God said in plain language, ‘I’m giving you a choice, forgive or die,’ a lot of people would go ahead and order their coffin. To my surprise, people go looking for this, and find it on my blog.

And one last, for today. Sometime ago I wrote an article called, I Hate Vacuum Cleaners!. It had begun life as a part of a discussion on the myLot forum, and I expanded it. From the article you'll gather that using vacuum cleaners is not my favourite form of employment, not because I don't like work, but because so many vacuum cleaners are so hard to use. Plainly they're never handled by their makers before their foisted on the public.

That'll do for today. More next time!
