Webitz - Checking out the Web from an amateur's point of view

Webitz - March 2007

Becoming Popular

March 3rd 2007 04:58
In the endless search for increasing one’s popularity on the Net – I don’t mean personally, but in the way of having people link to you, (which apparently is the way to go these days), I came across a site, and a newsletter, which are both worth mentioning.
The site is called LinkPopularity.com, and it does a good job of providing a free service in terms of allowing you to check which other sites are linking to yours. I found that there were far more Orble links to my two Orble sites than I’d expected, and far fewer links altogether to my main site. I wasn’t entirely surprised by the latter, since it’s not a site with a particular focus, and isn’t connected into any other group of sites beyond being one of the millions of blogs on blogger.com.
There were also some rather odd links showing up: four pages on my blogger.com site came up as linking to the main page of the site, and an Orble one. That’s a bit weird, because on checking these rather random pages, I couldn’t see anything that indicated they were linked to anything else. Odd. Still, at least it means there are links!
The review showed also that it’s worth providing comments on other sites, particularly those that pick up your URL at the same time. One of these was ProBlogger, which I’d visited quite a bit at one time, and had left some comments on. Comment on other blogs and sites, and leave your URL….this will help, even if it’s only in a small way.
I’ve included the LinkPopularity.com link service at the bottom of this post. Check it out and see what you think.
They mention something else, a newsletter that comes out fairly regularly relating to the whole issue of visibility on the Net. It proves to be focused a more at those who have money to spend on gaining visibility, but it’s worth mentioning here all the same. Planet Ocean’s Private Search Engine Newsletter is only available to people who sign up to get their book, the heavily titled, The Unfair Advantage
unfair
Book on Winning the Search Engine Wars.
This book is updated every month, apparently, so you’re never going to be behind the times. It costs what seems to me a rather hefty US$97, but it comes with two guarantees:
"We guarantee it! ...that is, we guarantee you'll be more than satisfied or else you can tell us the dog ate It anytime within six months. That's our Dog Ate It guarantee!
If you are unsatisfied for any reason, tell us – you'll get a no-questions-asked refund within a single business day ...and with a courteous 'thank you' that says "you can even keep the book!""
That’s quite a challenge to the buyer’s honesty, I’d suspect, but their claims are pretty good, and worth checking out.
There is a third item I can mention, although one qualification in this is that part of its set-up is that you need to provide several URLs of your competitors. As a blogger of random topics on my main site, I’m not sure who I’d class as a competitor. Guess it takes a bit of lateral thinking. Anyway LinkPopularity provides an excellent review of this program, and again it’s worth a look.

See who links to your web site. This service provides an easy one-click method of checking link popularity on three of the major search engines. They also provide a free monthly customized Link Popularity Report via e-mail.

Great link... I always check my traffic reports to see if anyone has linked to my blog... those links are worth gold!

Do you do any more than check them? Can you do anything else with them?
