Nerds to the rescue
September 3rd 2009 08:05
There was a time when the Dick Smith chain was mainly known for electronics. I can remember buying my son a book on basic electronics stuff, many years ago.
Nowadays, of course, Dick Smith has grown with the times and works in all manner of techno areas. And they're still providing pretty good prices on most items.
However, what's happening is that while people can buy the stuff at reasonable prices, they can't always get the bits together. Even the most basic technology can defeat people if they just don't have some of the know-how to get it working. (You don't have to be old and decrepit to have this problem. In fact, I managed to get a wi-fi set up working in my house without assistance from the family geek; although when an IT guy came some months later he told he was surprised it worked as it wasn't put together according to Hoyle!)
For those who struggle, help is at hand. A group called Need a Nerd has signed an exclusive agreement with the Dick Smith chain in NZ. Need a Nerd's aim is to assist people with basic set up and more, from mobiles to computers and everything in between. (Anyone who's tried to figure out instructions relating to mobiles these days will know what I mean.)
Under the agreement with Dick Smith, Need A Nerd will provide an onsite technology advice, installation, fault repair and training service initially in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Levin, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill.
Unbelievably, there's no service available in my home town of Dunedin. Perhaps Dunedinites are just too capable, and don't need the help?
