Social Mention

Searching Content from across the Universe? Well, that's what Social Mention claims.
I came across Social Mention on a blog called SAMBA (the six months MBA that Seth Godin ran recently). SAMBA is a place for those who were on the MBA course to blog about ideas, innovations and the like, and it has some very good posts and some fairly ordinary ones. But it's a place to keep an eye on for ideas.
Anyway, in one of the posts Rebecca Goldstein wrote about listening on the social network sites for people talking about your brand (or whatever you want to hear them talking about). She wrote: There are several tools that can help you listen. Instead of visiting the 1,000's of social media sites, you can use a free aggregator such as Social Mention that monitors conversations on 80 social media properties such as Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube, Digg, Google etc. In addition to listening to what people are saying about your brand, also listen what they are saying about your competition. It is not sneaky, but smart!
Social Mention is similar to Google Alerts, but you can pick up the vibes by putting a topic in the search form straightaway, without waiting for the alerts to arrive by email. Naturally I put my name in, and posts off my various blogs began turning up (although nothing much off Orble, which is interesting). This process kind of rubber stamps your existence, you might say, especially if you were feeling low in self-esteem on any particular day.
Along with a list of places you can be found on the Net (I mean, your topic can be found), Social Mention gives you a host of stats about stuff you might be interested in.
My strength is listed at 1% (yup, about right at the moment!);
My sentiment is at a ratio of 3:1 (I have no idea what this means);
My passion is 74% - I think that must be good!
And my reach is 6% - not so good. Though I guess that's better than my strength.
I get a mention once a day, somewhere, on average, and I'm listed by 17 authors (most of whom will be me, I suspect, in various guises).
My top key word is 'interesting' - interesting - and virtue, hits, easy and life come next, before 'today,' culture, church, recruiting and person. Hmmm. Recruiting?
I'm the top user of all these search results - surprise, surprise - and google blog is the top search engine for them.
Social Mention sounds quite fun, but do I really want to be notified every time I write something? Don't think so.
