The fate of Vacuum Cleaners
January 3rd 2008 06:45
Some time ago I wrote an article on vacuum cleaners and I how I have a considerable dislike of them. You can find a link to it above.
I see that Dyson vacuum cleaners are still being touted as the best on the market. We had a Dyson once, and it worked for some time, but like all vacuum cleaners it wasn’t built tough enough to withstand the sort of treatment our vacuum cleaners get. I don’t think personally we’re any worse than any other people in our handling of vcs, but for some reason they just don’t stand up to the strain.
The Dyson site makes the vcs look like something out of the space race, but essentially they’re still the same model as what got done in by us. I’m a bit amused to find that one of them is pronounced as a lightweight that doesn’t lose suction. Well, what good is a vacuum cleaner that does lose suction. Crikey!
There’s another that’s called The Ball – it twists and turns like no other vacuum. I’d like to have a Ball with The Ball, but as I said, I’ve been unlucky in love when it comes to vcs.
Our relatives in England had a Dyson – one that came apart in fact, if you gave it a couple of quick twists. (It was meant to.) It wasn’t near death’s door, like ours had been, but I still think it didn’t do the job I’d expect from a Dyson. Perhaps I’m just fussy, but considering the price of Dyson’s and their range, and their claims to be practically unbreakable, I’d really like them to find me one that will withstand the rigours of living in our household.
Still, it was fun checking out the Dyson site. It certainly looks classy, and it seems to be accessible - a word I use with books that I thought would be hard and turned out to be easy to read! – when it comes to finding the latest models and other things like vacuum cleaner parts. (There’s a whole section devoted to this.) Unfortunately I don’t think new parts would help our old Dyson. Like Hamlet, it’s suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

Candidly, I prefer my floors to be sweepable (is that a word?), must be, it got past spell check. Anyway Mike thanks for reminding me how much I hate floor sucking. Raven
