The fate of Vacuum Cleaners

January 3rd 2008 06:45
Some time ago I wrote an article on vacuum cleaners and I how I have a considerable dislike of them. You can find a link to it above.
I see that Dyson vacuum cleaners are still being touted as the best on the market. We had a Dyson once, and it worked for some time, but like all vacuum cleaners it wasn’t built tough enough to withstand the sort of treatment our vacuum cleaners get. I don’t think personally we’re any worse than any other people in our handling of vcs, but for some reason they just don’t stand up to the strain.
The Dyson site makes the vcs look like something out of the space race, but essentially they’re still the same model as what got done in by us. I’m a bit amused to find that one of them is pronounced as a lightweight that doesn’t lose suction. Well, what good is a vacuum cleaner that does lose suction. Crikey!
There’s another that’s called The Ballit twists and turns like no other vacuum. I’d like to have a Ball with The Ball, but as I said, I’ve been unlucky in love when it comes to vcs.
Our relatives in England had a Dyson – one that came apart in fact, if you gave it a couple of quick twists. (It was meant to.) It wasn’t near death’s door, like ours had been, but I still think it didn’t do the job I’d expect from a Dyson. Perhaps I’m just fussy, but considering the price of Dyson’s and their range, and their claims to be practically unbreakable, I’d really like them to find me one that will withstand the rigours of living in our household.
Still, it was fun checking out the Dyson site. It certainly looks classy, and it seems to be accessible - a word I use with books that I thought would be hard and turned out to be easy to read! – when it comes to finding the latest models and other things like vacuum cleaner parts. (There’s a whole section devoted to this.) Unfortunately I don’t think new parts would help our old Dyson. Like Hamlet, it’s suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

Maybe you should take to beating the rugs as in the old pre-vac days.

I'm not quite that masochistic...! But I did once have a wonderful little vacuum cleaner that did everything it was told, performed admirably for years, and was a breeze to clean. By contrast, even the Dyson's aren't up to scratch.

My Dirt Devil has been subjected to severe abuse Mike, and it's outlasted any Hoover I ever used. But I use it for crust laden garage floors, limited snow removal, scaring the crappola out of the cat and occasionally on the house carpets from Barrow to Juneau.

Candidly, I prefer my floors to be sweepable (is that a word?), must be, it got past spell check. Anyway Mike thanks for reminding me how much I hate floor sucking. Raven

A Dirt Devil.....sounds like it does the job. If we'd sucked up the sort of stuff you're talking about, the vc would have died immediately.

Do they have Kirby sweepers over there? I was just asking because they have a peculiar selling point. Priced at over $1,000,their premise is that vacuums are replaced every year and that a Kirby sweeper will last a life time making it the better buy!

Yes, James, they have Kirbys over here, although whether anyone ever buys them or not is a moot point. Here in NZ I think they cost even more than a $1000. My daughter was a Kirby saleswoman for about a week, until she discovered that in spite of demonstrating her heart out, no one bought the things once they discovered how much they were!

Mike, good and interesting post and I love the look of the vacuum cleaner, funny about things you use around the house, isn't it?

Yes, some of them are definitely more popular with me than others!
